Title: Spread Container
Description
Field of the Invention
The present invention generally relates to a spread container and a method for manufacturing such spread container. The invention more particularly relates to a spread container configured to eliminate the need for a knife to spread the spreadable material in the spread container.
Background of the Invention
Small portion container of butter, jam and other types of spreadable material are commonly known and available e.g. at hotels, canteens, airplanes, trains and restaurants. Various types of spreadable material is used for bread, pancake by way of example. When a tool is available the tool may be used to spread the butter, jam or whatever type of spreadable material that is desired. HOWEVER; when there is no tool available it may be very difficult to spread a layer of e.g. butter on a toast.
In many situations (e.g. in airplanes) it would be desirable to have an alternative that eliminates the need for a separate tool to spread the spreadable material.
Object of the Invention
Accordingly, it is an object of the present invention to provide an easily producible spread container which is configured to spread the contents of the container in a sophisticated way.
It is also an object of the present invention to provide a container which can be produced for reduced costs.
Summary of the Invention
The object of the present invention can be achieved by a spread container having the features defined in claim 1. Preferred embodiments are defined in the dependent sub claims and explained in the following description and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
The spread container according to the invention comprises a housing having a space configured to contain a spreadable material; an opening provided in the housing, which opening is adapted to allow for dispensing the spreadable material; means for covering the opening of the housing and a knife member configured to spread the spreadable material. The knife member is a separate member attached to the housing. The knife member covers at least the main part of the opening of the housing and the front side or the back side of the knife member is, at least in part, covered by a foil member.
The invention makes it possible to use an easily produced spread container as a knife. Accordingly, in case no tool is available the spreadable material can be spread by using the spread container knife.
By the term knife member is meant a knife like member that is indented to be used as a knife e.g. for spreadable material spread or for cutting or slicing.
It may be an advantage that a knife member opening is provided in the knife member and that the knife member opening is adapted to allow for dispensing the spreadable material. In this way the spreadable material can be dispensed through the knife member opening. It is possible to cover the knife member opening with an easily removable foil for covering the opening and a knife member.
It may be beneficial that a first opening and a second opening be provided in the housing, and that said second opening is adapted to allow for dispensing the spreadable material. In this way it is possible to dispense the spreadable material to the knife member without a knife member opening.
It may be an advantage that the back side of the knife member, at least in part, is covered by a foil member. Hereby it is achieved that the back side of the knife member is protected against things like dirt and bacteria.
It may be beneficial that the front side of the knife member is at least partially covered by a first foil member and the back side of the knife member is at least partially covered by a second foil member. It may be advantageous that two different foils are used to at least partially cover the front side of the knife member and the back side of the knife member, respectively.
Advantageously the knife member is basically plate shaped. The knife member may be rounded off or comprise a pointed part.
The method according to the invention for manufacturing a spread container comprising: a housing having a space configured to contain a spreadable material, an opening provided in the housing, which opening is adapted to allow for dispensing the spreadable material, means for covering the opening and a knife member configured to spread the spreadable material. The method comprises the following steps: a) providing a housing having a space configured to contain a spreadable material; b) attaching a separate knife member to the housing in such a manner that the knife member covers at least the main portion of the opening and c) providing a foil member to the knife member so that the foil member, at least partially, covers the front side knife member.
The method makes it possible to manufacture a reliable spread container easily.
Advantageously, the method according to the invention comprises the step of providing a knife member opening in the knife member so that the knife member opening is adapted to allow for dispensing the spreadable material.
Accordingly, the spreadable material can be dispensed through the knife member opening. Preferably, an easily removable foil is used to cover the opening and a knife member.
Advantageously, the method according to the invention comprises the step of providing a first opening and a second opening in the housing in such a way that the second opening is adapted to allow for dispensing the spreadable material. Thus, it is possible to dispense the spreadable material to the knife member without a knife member opening.
Preferably, the method according to the invention comprises the step of at least partially covering the back side of the knife member by a foil member. Hereby it is achieved that the back side of the knife member is protected against things like dirt and bacteria.
Advantageously, the method according to the invention comprises the following steps: - at least partially, covering the front side of the knife member by a first foil member and - at least partially, covering the back side of the knife member by a second foil member .
Preferable two different foils are used, at least in part, to cover the front side of the knife member and the back side of the knife member, respectively.
In one embodiment according to the invention the opening is facing towards the knife member and the spread container is adapted to be dispensed through the opening by squeezing the housing. Hereby it is achieved that the spread is directed to the knife member so that the spread can be easily spread by using the knife member. Is may be an advantage to limit the distance between the opening and the knife member.
In another embodiment according to the invention the opening is arranged adjacent to the knife member. In this way the distance between the opening and the knife member is minimized and hence it would be easier to place the spread on the knife member.
In one embodiment according to the invention one part of the knife member constitutes a member of the housing and another part of the knife member extends adjacent to the bottom of the housing. In this way it is possible to use the knife member in stead of a member. By having a part of the knife member extending adjacent to the bottom of the housing it is possible to have a longer knife member. This may be an advantage if the knife member should be used for cutting purposes by way of example.
In another embodiment according to the invention the knife member is detachable. In this way it is possible to use the knife member as an ordinary knife. Hence, the knife member may be used to empty the housing and to spread the spread. Moreover, the knife member may be used to cut e.g. a piece of bread. This embodiment gives great freedom and many user options and the need for an additional knife is eliminated.
In yet another embodiment according to the invention the knife member is adapted to be unfolded. It is an advantage to have a knife that can be unfolded because the knife member will take up less space when the knife member is not used. When the knife member has been unfolded the knife member will be ready to use and then it is not a problem that the knife member takes up space.
In another embodiment of the invention, the spread container comprises a weakening area extending substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the knife member. The weakening area may consist of perforations or any other form of structure made in order to limit the strength and / or stiffness of the knife member. My using a weaving area it is possible to bend or fold the knife member about the weakening area. Thus the weaving area may be used to make a knife member that is foldable. It is possible to make a knife member that is adapted to be unfolded.
In yet another embodiment of the invention, the spread container is adapted to be dispensed through the opening in a manner such that the spread is dispensed towards the front side surface of the knife member. Hereby it is achieved that the spread is dispensed in a desired area of the knife member so that the spread can be spread easily by using the front side of the knife member. I would be able to arrange the opening so that it is close to that part of the front side of the knife member that should receive the spread.
In one embodiment according to the invention the knife member is sawtoothed. In this manner the knife member would be suitable for cutting purposes. It would be possible to cut or slice a piece of bread or cheese by way of example. The number and shape of the saw teeth may be selected according to relevant specifications.
In one embodiment according to the invention, the knife member has both a set of long saw teeth and a set of short saw teeth arranged next to one another. This makes the knife member useful for several purposes.
In one embodiment according to the invention the knife member is covered with a package member. This may be an advantage because the knife member may be kept sterile or at least protected from dirt and bacteria coming from the surroundings. The package member may cover only the knife member; however, it may also cover the knife member as well as at least a portion of the rest of the spread container. The package member may cover the knife member and the complete spread container.
In another embodiment according to the invention the knife member comprises an oblong flat plate shaped portion which extends basically parallel to the middle axis of the housing. Here it is achieved that the knife member takes up as little space as possible and the knife member has a suitable shape.

Detailed Description of the Invention
Referring now in detail to the drawings for the purpose of illustrating preferred embodiments of the present invention, a spread container 2 according to the present invention is illustrated in FIG. 1. In FIG. 1 it shows how a spread container 2 according to the invention is being manufactured. FIG. 1a) shows a perspective view of a spread container 2 having a housing 4 with a wide opening 14. The housing 4 has a space 5 that is configured to contain a spreadable material (not shown). The opening 14 is provided in the housing 4 and the spreadable material may be dispensed through this opening 14. The housing comprises an elongate support portion 3 extending along the longitudinal axis X of the housing 4. However, in another embodiment of the invention, the support portion 3 may have a different geometry and may be oriented in a different way.
In FIG. 1 b) a layer of glue 10 has been added to the housing 4 and the support portion 3 of the housing 4. All suitable types of glue 10 may be used for this purpose. A welding or melting process may be used as an alternative to glue. The knife member 7 may be attached to the housing 4 and to the support portion 3 of the housing 4 by means of a welding process or a fusing process.
In FIG. 1c) an elongate plate shaped knife member 7 has been attached to the housing 4 and to the support portion 3 of the housing 4. The knife member 7 is equipped with saw teeth 24 along one side periphery of the knife member 7. The saw teeth 24 make the spread container 2 useful for cutting or slicing food stuff. A knife member opening 15 is provided in the knife member 7. The knife member opening 15 is configured to be used for dispensing the spreadable material 16. Therefore, the spreadable material 16 can be dispensed to the front side 6 of the knife member 7. It is possible to have a knife member 7 without saw teeth 24.
FIG. 1d) shows a perspective view of the spread container 2 after foil members 12, 12 "have been attached to the knife member 7. One foil member 12 covers that part of the knife member 7 which is intended for spreading the spreadable material and another foil member 12 "covers the remaining part of the front side of the knife member 7. The foil member 12 is equipped with a flap 28 which can be held on when the foil member 12 has to be removed in order to access the spreadable material contained in housing 4 of the spread container 2. A perforation 30 divides the foil members 12, 12 ". It is possible to have a one-piece foil. It is also possible to have a foil that only covers the opening 14 'or 15 (see Fig. 9) for dispensing the spread (16).
FIG. 2 is an exploded view of a spread container 2 according to the invention. The spread container 2 comprises a housing 4 having an elongate support portion 3 extending along the longitudinal axis X of the housing 4. The spread container 2 further comprises an elongate knife member 7 having a geometry corresponding to the shape of the housing 4 and the support portion 3 of the housing 4. An elongate round off knife member opening 15 is provided in the knife member 7. The spread container 2 also comprises one foil member 12, 12 "having a first foil member part 12 having a flap 28 and another foil member part 12 ". The foil members 12, 12 "are divided by a line of perforation 30.
FIG. 3 illustrates three different perspective views of a spread container 2 according to the invention. In FIG. 3a) is a perspective top view of the spread container 2. The spread container 2 is covered by foil members 12, 12 ".
In FIG. 3b) the first foil member 12 is being pulled off using the flap 28 attached to the first foil member 12. The knife member opening 15 and the knife member 7 can be seen under the removed first foil member 12.
FIG. 3c) shows a bottom view of the spread container 2. A second foil member 12 'covers the back side 8 of the knife member. The foil members 12, 12 ', 12 "keep the surfaces of the knife member 7 clean, which may be important according to sanitation or hygienic issues.
Three perspective views of a spread container 2 according to the invention can be seen in FIG. 4th
FIG. 5 illustrates a spread container 2 according to the invention. In this embodiment, the first foil member 12 is divided into to foil member portions 12 '", 12" "connected by a connection line 11.
FIG. 6 illustrates perspective cross sectional views of a spread container 2 according to the invention 2. It can be seen from Fig. 6 that the spread container 2 comprises a housing 4 having a space 5 and that the housing 4 is closed by a knife member 7 that function as a child or member. A knife member opening 15 is provided in the knife member 7 and a foil 12 covers the front side of the knife member 7 as well as the knife member opening 15.
FIG. 7 illustrates another embodiment of a spread container 2 according to the invention. The spread container 2 comprises a housing 4 that contains spread. The back side 20 of the housing 4 is facing upwards. The front side of the housing 4 is covered by a knife member 7 which extends further than the housing 4. Therefore, the free part of the knife member 7 can be used to spread the spread housed in the housing 4. An opening is provided at the end of the housing which faces the distal part of the knife member 7, however; the opening is covered by a foil member 12. When the foil member 12 is removed from the opening the spread in the housing 4 can be dispensed through the opening by squeezing the housing 4. The spread will be dispensed through the opening and be distributed on the backside surface 8 of the knife member 4. Then the knife member 7 will be ready to use as a tool for spreading the spread.
FIG. 8 illustrates a spread container 2 basically similar to the spread container 2 shown in FIG. 7. The spread container 2 comprises a cover 22 which protects the knife member 7. A foil member 12 is provided to cover the opening 14 in the housing 4. The cover 22 is intended to protect the knife member 7 from dirt and bacteria so that The knife member 7 is clean and ready to use when the cover 22 is removed.
It would be possible to have a spread container 2 where the cover 22 and the foil member 12 were integrated into one foil element.
FIG. 9 shows the spread container 2 illustrated in FIG. 8. However, the cover 22 has been removed. The foil member 12 has been removed from the opening 14 'so the spread can be dispensed from the spread container 2 by squeezing the housing 4. The spread container 2 is provided with saw teeth 24 along the one side periphery of the knife member 7 The saw teeth 24 makes the spread container 2 useful for cutting or slicing foodstuff such as bread, sausages or fruit by way of example. The saw teeth 24 may extend along a larger portion of the periphery of the knife member 7 than shown in FIG. 9th
FIG. 10 illustrates the spread container 2 shown in FIG. 8 seen from another view. The front side 18 of the housing 4 has a flat surface and the knife member 7 extend an extension of the front side 18 of the housing 4. The spread container 2 comprises a cover 22 that protects the knife member 7.
FIG. 11 illustrates another spread container 2 according to the invention. The spread container 2 comprises a knife member 7 that is unfoldable and detachable. It would also be possible to apply a spread container 2 that is either unfoldable or detachable. An opening 14 'is provided in housing 4. A weakening line 26 is provided at the proximal end of the knife member 7. Further, the knife member 7 can be rotated about the weakening line 26. It is possible to deliver the spread container 2 in a folded configuration so that the spread container 2 does not take up much space. It is also possible to detach the knife member 7. This may be an advantage because the knife member 7 can be used almost as an ordinary knife e.g. to empty a spread container.
FIG. 12 illustrates the spread container 2 shown in FIG. 5. It can be seen that the angular position of the knife member 7 is configured to be changed. In one position the knife member 7 is parallel to the longitudinal axis X of the housing 4. In a second position the knife member 7 is displaced with an angle relative to the axial axis X of the housing 4. In a third position the knife member 7 is displaced with an angle β relative to the axial axis X of the housing 4 and in a fourth position the knife member 7 is displaced with an angle γ relative to the axial axis X of the housing 4. Thus, the spread container 2 is collapsible and accordingly it is possible to store the spread container 2 while it is folded so that the angle relative to the axial axis X of the housing 4 is 180 degrees. In this way the spread container 2 only takes up little space while it is folded. The spread container 2 may be unfolded when the knife member 7 is intended to be used to spread the spread from the spread container 2 through the opening 14 '.
FIG. 13 illustrates a spread container 2 which is being dispensed on the back side 8 of the knife member 7. The spread 16 which may be butter, jam, jelly or any other type of spread is dispensed through the opening 14 '.
FIG. 14 illustrates a spread container 2 which is being dispensed through a knife member opening 15 which is provided so that the spread 16 is dispensed onto the front side surface 6 of the knife member 7.
In FIG. 15 a spread container 2 almost similar to the spread container 2 illustrated in FIG. 14 is shown. The spread container 2 shown in FIG. 15 is provided with a weaving area 26 extending basically perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the knife member. The weakening area may consist of perforations or any other form of structure made in order to limit the strength and / or stiffness of the knife member. By using a weaving area it is possible to bend or fold the knife member about the weakening area. Thus the weaving area may be used to make a knife member that is foldable. It is possible to make a knife member that is adapted to be unfolded. It is possible to have a knife member 7 that can be detached.
The spread container may be a disposable container.
